Center-to-Limb Variation of Solar 3-D Hydrodynamical Simulations

چکیده
We examine closely the solar Center-to-Limb variation of continua and lines and compare observations with predictions from both a 3-D hydrodynamic simulation of the solar surface (provided by M. Asplund and collaborators) and 1-D model atmospheres. Intensities from the 3-D time series are derived by means of the new synthesis code Assǫt, which overcomes limitations of previously available codes by including a consistent treatment of scattering and allowing for arbitrarily complex line and continuum opacities. In the continuum, we find very similar discrepancies between synthesis and observation for both types of model atmospheres. This is in contrast to previous studies that used a “horizontally” and time averaged representation of the 3-D model and found a significantly larger disagreement with observations. The presence of temperature and velocity fields in the 3-D simulation provides a significant advantage when it comes to reproduce solar spectral line shapes. Nonetheless, a comparison of observed and synthetic equivalent widths reveals that the 3-D model also predicts more uniform abundances as a function of position angle on the disk. We conclude that the 3-D simulation provides not only a more realistic description of the gas dynamics, but, despite its simplified treatment of the radiation transport, it also predicts reasonably well the observed Center-to-Limb variation, which is indicative of a thermal structure free from significant systematic errors. Non–equilibrium Co Chemistry in the Solar Atmosphere
Investigating the reliability of the assumption of instantaneous chemical equilibrium (ICE) for calculating the CO number density in the solar atmosphere is of crucial importance for the resolution of the long-standing controversy over the existence of ‘cool clouds’ in the chromosphere, and for determining whether the cool gas owes its existence to CO radiative cooling or to a hydrodynamical pr...
متن کاملOxygen lines in solar granulation II. Centre-to-limb variation, NLTE line formation, blends and the solar oxygen abundance
Context. There is a lively debate about the solar oxygen abundance and the role of 3D models in its recent downward revision. These models have been tested using high resolution solar atlases of flux and disk-centre intensity. Further testing can be done using centreto-limb variations. Aims. Using high resolution and high S/N observations of neutral oxygen lines across the solar surface we seek...
متن کاملCenter - to - limb variation of the enigmatic Na I D 1 and D 2 polarization profiles
The remarkable polarization structure of the Na i D 1 and D 2 lines that is due to coherent scattering has remained an enigma, since it has not yet been possible to find an explanation that is consistent with both current understanding of quantum mechanics and the astrophysical properties of the Sun's atmosphere. To guide future theoretical efforts we have here explored the detailed center-to-l...
متن کاملCenter-to-limb variation of the solar oscillation New results from MDI data
Using 17 hours of full-disk MDI Doppler data we have investigated the center-to-limb variation of the oscillatory wave spectrum of the solar photosphere. Power distributions in the khν-plane are calculated for fields of 20◦ × 20◦ on the Sun, centered at every 10◦ heliographic latitude. From the centerto-limb variation of the power in the f mode and the lowest 7 p modes we obtain information abo...
متن کاملObservational manifestations of solar magneto-convection — center-to-limb variation
We present the first center-to-limb G-band images synthesized from high resolution simulations of solar magneto-convection. Towards the limb the simulations show “hilly” granulation with dark bands on the far side, bright granulation walls and striated faculae, similar to observations. At disk center G-band bright points are flanked by dark lanes. The increased brightness in magnetic elements i...
